Pattern: Mini Butterfly Garden Square

While looking for square to make for the Blue Squares Too swap I came across a very pretty 12". I was able to easily alter it down to 6" and the original creator, Chris Simon, has been kind enough to let me post the alterations here. =D Make sure to check out the bigger version too!




Mini Butterfly Garden 6" square

Hook: H/8 - 5.00mm hook
Yarn: Basic Worsted Weight

Ch 4, join with slip st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 15 dc in ring. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp. *# Dc in next 3 dc. # (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next dc and in ch 2 sp. Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp. *# Ch 6, sk next 7 dc, # (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 4: Sl st in next dc and in ch 2 sp. Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp. *# Dc in next 2 dc, ch 6, sk ch 6 sp, dc in next 2 dc, # (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 5: Sl st in next dc and in ch 2 sp. Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp. *# Dc in next 4 dc, ch 2, tr around ch 6 of both Round 3 and Round 4, into 4th of 7 skipped dc stitches in Round 2, Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, # (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 6: Sl st in next dc and in ch 2 sp. Ch 1, (dc, ch 2, dc) in same sp. *# Dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in ch 2 sp, dc in tr, 2 dc in ch 2 sp, dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in ch 2 sp, dc in tr, 2 dc in ch 2 sp, dc in next 6 dc, # (dc, ch 2, dc) in next corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in beginning sc.

Fasten Off. Weave in ends.

that's great! but am i weird b/c they look like dragon flies to me.. i'm probably just weird... i love it!

allena - nah i dont think you're weird, dragonflies are cool! i think it could be either, hehe. i'm glad you like the square!

i'm thinking this or the bigger one could both be really cute done in a thinner yarn or thread and all joined up for a shawl or something.

I've seen this square madeup with some top stitching for the antennae and to adorn the wings. It's such a clever pattern!!!

too much time on my hands here at work today...

so looking at this more i can see butterflies in the fileted areas of the pattern and dragonflies when I'm actually looking for a shape in the chains and the center tr, heh. hmmm a lil color tied into those areas would be really pretty im thinking.
